What’s your budget?

Systems can range from $200 to $7,000, deciding on what your budget is a good way to start. There are definitely affordable options that will give you solid quality and functionality. Finding what features are also extremely important for choosing a controller or device.

Things that may or may not matter to you:

  • Jog wheel

    • some controllers don’t have a jog wheel at all while others have varying sizes, textures and constructions. If you’re a DJ looking to learn a bit about scratching it’s important to choose a jog wheel that’ll be conducive.

    • some premium controllers even have motorized platters that simulate using vinyls

  • Performance pads

    • these are used to launch difference cues and samples

  • Inputs

    • some of the more premium controllers have more inputs for additional microphones and aux sources

  • Output

    • intro controllers have only one type of output, some with only RCA cable ports that require additional cables when connected to various sound systems

    • Mid level and premium controllers have several types of outputs, making it more simple to plug and play. Some have booth outputs, allowing the DJ to the control volume of a speaker nearest to the DJ without effecting what everyone else is hearing.

  • No computer? No Problem

    • Many touring and festival DJs don’t even use their laptop performing. Several premium CDJs and controllers are designed for DJs that are able to prepare their sets ahead of time and don’t want a laptop getting in the way of connecting with your audience with USB flash drive and portable hard drive compatibility.

  • Size and Portability

    • many of the ultra cheap controllers offer unbelievable portability but sometimes lack build quality and feature sets because of it

    • For large jog wheels expect more size and weight with a controller

    • Once you add a case you’ll be looking at additional size and weight and it’s yours so you’ll be responsible for lugging it around.
