Song Structure:

  • Hook/Chorus

    • the repetitive ear-worm that people hum or sing a long

  • Verses

    • often the storytelling part of the song

    • usually musically less complicated to allow the lyrics take the lead

  • Bridge

    • varies from the chorus and verses to break-up monotony of the rest song

    • can sometimes use a new melody or musical techniques for that separation

Tempo

  • The tempo is the speed of the underlying beat. Kind of the like the heart beat or pulse of a song. Beats per Minute are used to determine a songs tempo.

  • Tempo aka “time” in Italian

Pitch & Chords

  • chord or grouping of notes played simultaneously can create harmony, which is when two or more notes complement one another.

  • Major chords are known for their pleasant, positive, or triumphant moods.

  • Minor chords are known for being somber and melancholy, and can effectively evoke a sense of desperation, urgency, or apathy

  • Pitch is used to define how low or high a sound is

  • Key is a system of functionally related chords deriving from the major and minor scales (scale is any set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch) with a central note, called the tonic (or keynote)
